SPEAK OUT! Support legislation to stop aggressive panhandling and disorderly street behavior!
Downtown needs your support of two ordinances that will go a long way in preventing aggressive panhandling and drunken, disorderly street behavior. The ordinances will:

Ban the sale of single beers within the Downtown Core.

Restrict panhandling to selected designated sites.

Over the past decade, nearly $5 billion worth of new investment has changed the face of Downtown Memphis. It is imperative that we protect that investment by making sure Downtown is an inviting and comfortable place. Unfortunately, the perception of safety is still too often jeopardized by the disorderly actions of a small group of offenders. Steps have been taken to stop unacceptable street behavior, but now we must do even more.

In the weeks ahead, the Center City Commission will be proposing two ordinances to the City Council that we believe could make a dramatic difference in addressing the chronic misconduct of a few. Your support and advocacy are essential in helping to pass these ordinances.

New ordinances proposed by Memphis City Council

New ordinances will soon be proposed to members of the Memphis City Council. These will affect our industry significantly, and we want to be certain you are fully informed on the issue.

With action that will greatly improve the visitor experience in Memphis, the new laws deal directly with panhandling and public drunkeness. Without approval, the behavior of a small group of aggressive panhandlers threaten the good name of our destination and the health of our industry.

Memphis College of Art will move grad school to South Main Arts District

Great news for South Main!

From the Commercial Appeal, January 20, 2009:

Memphis College of Art’s graduate school is moving Downtown, joining the likes of the University of Memphis law school and the Visible School.

The college committed Wednesday to spend nearly $3 million to buy and renovate an early 20th Century industrial building at 477 S. Main for classrooms, studios, galleries and retail space.
